acob Friesen, a Mennonite from
south Russia, built the original
windmill in the Mennonite
settlement village of Gnadenau in
1876. Gnadenau was several
miles south of present day
Hillsboro. The mill was built to
grind grain into flour.
By the time the mill was
photographed in 1904 it had
been unused for a number of
years.
The mill was replicated by Dr.
Richard Wall, who finished the
project in 1994. He used a 1904
photograph to scale the size and
proportions of the building.
